Understanding auto insurance

Auto insurance can help pay for covered losses when you drive or own a car. The parts you need depend on your state, your car and how you use it.

Start by thinking about what you could afford to lose. A state minimum policy may meet the law but still leave you with bills after a serious crash. If you have a loan or lease, ask what coverage the lender requires. Check both sets of rules before you choose.

Compare coverage, not just the monthly price

Two quotes can cost much the same but cover different things. Compare the limits, the amount you pay toward a claim and the extras included in each.

Ask for the total cost for the full policy term, not just the first payment. A deductible is the part of a covered loss you pay yourself. A higher one may lower the premium, but keep enough money set aside to pay it if you need to make a claim.

What about pickups and vans?

A family minivan, SUV or personal pickup may fit a personal auto policy. A work van or delivery truck may need business coverage instead.

The badge on the vehicle does not tell the whole story. A pickup used for school runs is different from one used to haul goods for paying customers. Explain who owns it, who drives it and what a normal week looks like. Even part-time delivery work is worth discussing.

Before you request a quote

Have your car and driver details ready. Decide which limits you want to compare, and answer each question with care. Check how your details will be used.

Your current declarations page is a useful starting point. It lists key policy details, including limits and deductibles. Mark anything you want to change rather than copying it without checking. If you switch, confirm the new start date and time before you cancel the old policy so you avoid a gap.

What coverage should you compare?

Liability coverage helps pay for covered harm you cause to other people or their property. Ask about uninsured drivers and medical costs too; state rules differ.

Collision helps with damage from a crash; comprehensive can help with other covered events, such as theft or hail. Neither means every loss is covered. Ask separately about a rental car during repairs, towing and custom equipment. These may have their own limits or cost extra.

How can you look for better value?

Ask about discounts, but do not cut protection you need just to lower the price. Look at what you could pay after a claim as well as each month.

Use the same information for every quote so the prices mean something. Check whether a discount depends on an app that tracks driving, paying in full or keeping another policy. Ask what the price would be without the discount, and check that each driver is listed correctly.

What details will you need?

  • Your ZIP code and the drivers to be insured
  • Vehicle year, make, model and VIN if available
  • Current coverage and the limits you want to compare
  • Accidents, violations and any business use

Frequently asked questions

Is every pickup covered by personal auto insurance?

No. Vehicle size, ownership and use can affect eligibility. Ask the provider to confirm before applying; a commercial or specialist policy may be needed.
